Drum heaters are used to heat
containers of different viscous materials. They can be wrapped around or placed
inside containers that hold substances such as Wax, Grease, Honey, Syrup, Oil
etc.. Drum heaters are used on drums or process materials in a number of ways.
Drum heaters are specified by capacity since drums and containers are
listed by capacity. Choices include: 5-gallon,
15-gallon, 30-gallon, 55-gallon, and
intermediate bulk container (IBC).
Specifications for drum heaters also include maximum operating
temperature, AC voltage required, wattage delivered,For Inside Use Only
watt density and phase.
Watt
density is
calculated by dividing the available wattage by the heated surface area. It is a
good measure of how quickly a
drum heater can transfer
heat to a surface. Choices for sleeve or sheath material include: aluminum,
brass, copper, fluoropolymer, high temperature foil (HT foil), iron, nickel
alloy, polyimide, rubber, steel, and stainless steel. Drum heaters that have an
exposed heating element with no sheathing are also available.
Drum heaters differ in
terms of features. Some products are corrosion resistant, finned, or
explosion-proof. Others features dynamic power regulation or are rated for
cryogenic use. Hazardous location heaters are designed for use in places where
there is a risk of fire or explosion.
Underwriters
Laboratories (UL)
or other regulatory agencies
often rate these devices. Indirect fired heaters use a secondary heat exchanger
to separate the breathable air stream from the combustion air stream. Drum
heaters with overheat protection contain an
automatic shut-off other mechanism to prevent overheating of the material.

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to get a thick, viscous material out of
a drum. It just won't flow!

even heating the wrong method and you could end up in the soup.
How Does A Drum Heater Work? The typical band-type heater has electrical heating
elements inside a metal or rubber sheath. The heat is conducted from the
elements through the inner wall of the sheath, through the side of the drum and
into the product. Thermostat heaters, like our Model TRX55, have a temperature
controller that senses the temperature of the sheath and turns the power on and
off depending on the setting of the control. When the sensor calls for heat, the
heater turns on and develops full power. When the power is on, the temperature
of the sheath can be several hundred degrees, so thermostat models work best
with products that tolerate heat well without burning. Infinite Control heaters,
like our Model SRX55, don't sense the temperature. Instead, they constantly
pulse the power on and off, which provides more gentle heating. They're ideal
for heat sensitive products like foods, honey, and chocolate.
Immersion Heaters
fit through the bung opening in the drum and the heating surface is directly in
contact with the product, so they're faster and more efficient. They also have a
thermostat, so they work best with non-heat sensitive products. They're made
from stainless steel so they can be used with a wide range of products.
Heat Jackets and Blankets have flexible heating elements woven
into insulating fiberglass and silicone rubber. They completely surround the
container and help reduce heat loss, so they're more efficient than band
heaters.
Heating Cabinets are
electric or steam powered, and allow you to heat and hold up to four drums at a
preset temperature. They're very efficient and convenient if heating drums is an
everyday part of your operation.

plastic drums. It uses a Thermostat to protect the drum from heat damage.
Plastic is not a good conductor of heat, so heating product in plastic drums
takes much longer.
